Min Byung-soo, CEO of Ulsan Jeil Ilbo, Special Contributions - The Coming World of 'Digital Twin' 2021.08.14

The boundaries between commerce and art are breaking down due to the remarkable development of information and communication technology. Can media art, which was mainly used in the commercial field, enter the realm of art?&ndquo; I have had many doubts. But it's different now. This is because it is believed that the utility of realistic media technology can lower the social cost of experience. In other words, you can experience it realistically without spending time and money.

Digital Twin, which began to develop with the 4th Industrial Revolution, was initially partially applied to improve the production efficiency of the manufacturing industry. However, it is now being used to solve complex problems in all industries. The reason is that related technologies are developing, such as sensor technology for data collection to implement digital twin, big data technology for data analysis, artificial intelligence technology for simulation, data weight reduction technology for vast information processing, and technology for improving processing speed through game engine.

First of all, in the shipbuilding industry, it is possible to pre-prove vast yards through simulation in a virtual space to build digital 10 yards, and to develop a simulator equipped with 3D blocks. The automobile industry can be applied to the development of hydrogen vehicles and electric vehicles to conduct preliminary experiments on new models, and the petrochemical industry can monitor, simulate, and predictive preservation of PLC or DCS facilities in operation.

The energy industry can control power supply and demand through data synchronized with the real world, and can build a pleasant city by collecting all data created in the city in a virtual space for smart city implementation and diagnosing and feedbacking all predictable problems in the city. In addition, in the construction industry, problems through simulation can be identified and supplemented before building buildings, roads, and ports, enabling safe construction that can comply with delivery dates and reduce budgets. In the case of smart farms, it is possible to control plant growers in virtual spaces by creating and synchronizing the same virtual growers as plant growers, so that plants can be grown in an optimal growing environment to provide fresh food.

At the current pace of technological advancement, the entry into the ‘sensorization society’ is clear, and the introduction of digital twins based on this will accelerate further. Moreover, companies facing the limitations of production technology development are focusing on increasing profits through the development of new products and quality improvement by incorporating ICT technology. In addition, as non-face-to-face work activities are increasing in the face of the untact era, many companies are expected to consider introducing digital twins.

There are many difficulties that I feel when I consult with companies after receiving a proposal from my company to build a digital twin. Since data is managed at such a rudimentary level, there are many cases where environments for data collection must be established first. ICT systems are now the company's neural network, and data must act as blood that drives the neural network.

Information and communication technology for managing companies is developing day by day. Advanced countries such as the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom are also making all-out efforts to secure technologies while experiencing innovative changes due to the introduction of digital twins. In Korea, the Korean version of the New Deal in 2020, digital twin is included in it and is rushing to promote it as a national project. Ulsan City is also making tremendous efforts by including digital twins in the Ulsan Industrial Complex construction project.
