Min Byung-soo, CEO of Ulsan Jeil Ilbo, Special Contributions - The Coming World of 'Digital Twin' 2021.08.05

Much of the content in cartoons and science fiction that we saw when we were young is now actually made up in our lives. Likewise, much of the content of cartoons and science fiction we're seeing now will bring about changes in the lives of future generations. It is possible because it will evolve endlessly as a result of the imagination seeking human convenience. One day, I was surprised by the unfamiliar sight of waves about to overflowing from a large electronic display in the middle of Seoul. This is called ‘realistic media technology’.

One such imagination is virtualization. In the era of untact, it is ‘Digital Twin’ that has recently begun to be in the spotlight as a technology that can change our lives. All possible situations in the real world are monitored by creating twins in the same shape in the computer's three-dimensional digital space and synchronizing them in real time. Based on this, it is an intelligent convergence technology that can optimize objects in the real world by predicting results in advance.

It is also true that when I have digital twin-related meetings with clients, I sometimes find myself in a situation where I do not easily understand twins, twins implemented in the virtual world. Simply put, when a digital twin is implemented in one factory, the 3D modeling information held for equipment and facilities of the currently operating factory is used or photographed to visualize it in three dimensions. Then, you can think of it as being able to control the real world in a virtual space by creating a virtualized factory that looks exactly like the factory in operation on a computer. I want to express this as ‘Copy & Paste’.

Digital twin allows you to try various things in advance that are difficult to do due to the risk of safety accidents, such as factory or city construction that requires a lot of budget in the real world, large projects that take a lot of construction time. Scenarios can be created to test new facilities in a running plant or projects that have been designed, and problems can be identified and improved in advance by trying them in a digital space. Digital twin is a revolutionary change that not only saves time, safety, and budget, but also reduces unexpected accidents and trial and error through real-time synchronization with virtual space.

Digital twins are different from ‘virtual physical systems’, which are built in the advanced stage of smart factories. A virtual physical system is a system that detects and controls the current state of things through IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, while a digital twin is a system that can monitor and simulate information up to the present and the future of things to preserve prediction. To implement virtualization, it goes through four stages. First, 3D spatial information is constructed by photographing modeling information or actual appearance to replicate the real world. Second, AI (Artificial Intelligence) big data analysis is performed on monitored information by controlling the real world. Third, simulation is performed with the analyzed information to determine the possible situation in advance. Fourth, it optimizes the real world with simulated information.

In order to adapt to and survive global changes, thorough preparations must be made through a cool-headed analysis of what level of their companies are at. It is clear that the digital twin makes innovative changes to us, such as diagnosis of reality and prediction of the future, but information security and hacking preparation synchronized in the virtual space must be perfected. Amid the progress of information and communication technology that is developing at a tremendous speed, digital twin is not a future technology, but a current technology that has come close to us. ▷Continue to the lower part
